Stem cells are human cells that have the ability to develop into many different cell types in the body. These properties provide stem cells with unique capabilities for tissue repair and regeneration.

At Blue Phoenix we only use umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells, which have proven to be the most effective in treating a range of medical conditions.

Stem cell treatments are highly individualized. In most cases, we inject stem cells directly into the area that is being treated. This could be for a joint treatment (in the shoulder, for example) or an aesthetic treatment (in the scalp or face). We also perform general treatments in which the cells are delivered intravenously, allowing for the effects of the treatment to be systemic throughout the body.

Intravenous treatment is used for all conditions in which it is not possible to inject the cells locally, such as a condition in the internal organs (gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, neurological, endocrine, etc.). In this case, the stem cells act through a so-called homing effect, in which the diseased organ is constantly releasing cytokines and inflammatory substances into the blood that inform the rest of the body which organ is affected. The stem cells follow these inflammatory signals to reach the organ that needs them most and initiate their therapeutic action there specifically.

Stem cells act in different ways:

  1. They have the ability to replicate into multiple tissues, especially connective tissue.

  2. They transfer organelles to diseased cells in your own tissue, thus promoting the survival of your own cells.

  3. They release exosomes – vesicles filled with anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory substances that have the ability to regulate the function of the tissues where they are released.

Umbilical cord-derived cells have three main advantages over autologous stem cells:

  1. There is no invasive procedure to extract the cells from the patient like there is from a bone marrow- or adipose tissue-derived cell treatment.

  2. There’s no limit on the number of cells that can be used with umbilical cells. With autologous cells, however, patients are limited by the number of cells that are already present in their tissues.

  3. Autologous stem cells tend to lose functionality and may become damaged over time, making them less effective as a treatment.

Typically patients visit us for a full week of treatment, with the stem cell procedure on day 3 or day 4. They will also spend one hour each day in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, which is a powerful healing and anti-inflammatory treatment on its own. The rest of the time will be spent in consultations and receiving complimentary vitamin IVs. Patients can expect to spend about two hours a day with us during their week of treatment.

Generally speaking we advise patients to eat as cleanly as they can leading up to treatment, and not to drink alcohol or smoke in the days immediately before and after their procedure. We also do a pre-treatment consult with all patients to ensure that they’re prepared and that their treatment has the highest possible chance for success.

A single stem cell treatment can lead to clinical results that can last for years after application depending on the underlying condition. For example, in joint treatments, connective tissue proliferation has been seen up to 6 months after cell injection. In autoimmune diseases, depending on the severity, adequate symptom control can be achieved for up to one year after intravenous application. It is important to keep in mind that while stem cells are a very promising treatment, it is not possible to be sure of the effects they will have in each particular case.

‘Blue’ comes from blue zones, which are certain areas of the world where people live far beyond the average life expectancy. ‘Phoenix’ comes from the mythical phoenix rising, representing the rebirth from health obstacles that many people have had to face before coming to visit us.

This depends on both the type of treatment a patient receives, as well as their overall health and age. Some patients recover in as little as a week, while others can take up to a month or longer. Our doctors work with each patient individually on a post-treatment protocol in order to ensure that recovery goes as smoothly as possible. We also have regular post-treatment consults with all patients.

Yes! Medellin has had a renaissance over the past several years, and is now the home to a large number of both short-term and long-term visitors. Medellin even recently became the most visited city in Colombia, a distinction previously held by Cartagena for a number of years. We are also located in the city’s premier medical tower, in a very safe area of the city.

We have partnered with a stem cell lab that is a member of the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy (ISCT), which ensures that the lab follows the strictest quality and safety standards.

No serious or life-threatening adverse events have been reported after stem cell treatments. You may experience minor side effects such as chills, fever, and flu-like symptoms. In treatments where we apply the stem cells locally (joint, spine, aesthetic, urologic), you may also have some swelling and pain where the cells were injected. Both the hyperbaric oxygen chamber and the complementary IVs that we offer during the week of treatment will help you recover more quickly.

For every patient interested in stem cell treatment, we begin by having an initial consultation in order to go through their specific case and find out if stem cells are an appropriate treatment. In special cases where there isn’t much specific scientific research, we first have a staff meeting of doctors and the stem cell lab staff to make an informed decision.

Yes! Stem cells are a potent anti-aging and anti-inflammatory treatment that can help improve your overall health and well-being even if you don’t have any known illness.
